Abstract

This article explores the influence of automation induced changes in enterprises resource
planning systems (ERPSs) upon sustainability accounting and reporting, as well as on specific difficulties.
Applying holistic and content analysis on current features of ERPSs as well the new-gen automation
platform based ERPS reveals that in general, accounting is improved but by employing an environmental
lens for particularly sustainability accounting quality will be enhanced. Information was sourced from
the developers of major ERPSs and automation platforms that delivering their solutions not only on a
local but also international scale. This paper contributes to a better comprehension on the potential of
ERPSs for sustainability accounting and reporting by depicting benefits as well as challenges arising from
an increasing degree of automation through robotic process automation (RPA) und intelligent process
automation solutions. The results have implications for academia, practice and also address a research
gap by shedding light on the professional standpoint of ERPSs evolution consequences whilst providing
an additional competitive edge companies may benefit from to enhance sustainability
reporting/accountability processes.
